If you’re a Baby boomer, you probably can not remember a period when you weren’t mindful of Smokey the Bear (or only”Smokey Bear,” as he is sometimes called), the powerful nonetheless lovable forest service mascot. Whether he confronted you by the TV display or by an”Uncle Sam Wants You!” -form of billboard or poster, his message was always clear:”Only YOU Can Prevent Forest Fires.”
Smokey’s Wildfire prevention campaign is the longest-running Public Service Advertising effort in U.S. history. You might have guessed Smokey got begun and….
Imagine it’s The mid 1940’s, and you’re Lyle F. Watts, the US Forest Service Chief. The vast majority of able-bodied men are working in the armed forces and can not be spared to fight forest fires in the western United States. What would the United States Forest Service do?
Realizing That many woods fires were caused by human neglect (see related article,”What (Who) Caused the Alberta Wildfire? “), the Forest Service, under the leadership of Mr. Watts, began an ad campaign to educate the general public about the risks of forest fires, in the hope that local communities might prevent the flames from starting in the first location. Nevertheless, they needed a logo to represent his or her origin. Even the Disney Studios allowed the woods agency to borrow Bambi, the most popular animated deer out of the tremendously successful film, but only for a single year. So a brand new icon was needed.
Maintaining The woods monster motif, the forest service, in cooperation with the Advertising Council, determined that a stand would best represent the fire-prevention effort, also Smokey was born. The effort started out relatively small, with a single poster depicting that the jeans-clad stand putting a bucket of water on a camp fire. The caption read,”Smokey says — Care will prevent 9 out of 10 forest fires”
The brand new Campaign captured on, well, like wildfire. So on the Smokey Bear image began emerging on posters and cards, comic books and postage stamps.

Company Ideal Toys did them one better by including together with their doll a mail-in card whereby children could eventually become”junior forest rangers.” By 1955, a half of kids had implemented. He received so much mail that, in 1964he had been awarded his own zip code.
Smokey’s Official slogan was changed in 1947 to”Recall…only YOU can prevent forest Fires” The new slogan remained in place for over five decades, until it Was shifted in 2000 to”Only YOU Can Prevent Wildfires.” The shift was Implemented in an effort to expand the effort attention to include grassland Fires in addition to forest fires.
